These are important considerations as to whether or not your Internet shopping is truly green. Let’s look at situations where ordering online would be the better alternative and then a few ways to make that situation greener.

1. Buying books/textbooks

If you’re anything like me, and you love books, you may find yourself spending hours at the bookstore trying to decide between dozens of books you could buy. And the reason you’re at the bookstore and not the library is because your local library doesn’t have the book you want. Sad, but true. And if you’re buying textbooks for classes, then you know that sometimes it’s hard to get the book you want at the actual bookstore in used condition to save you money. So, what do you do? Hit popular sites such as Amazon.com.

2. Groceries and Pharmacy Items

There are some people who, believe it or not, just don’t drive. Yes, it’s true that these people do not have a car. It is possible, then, that having groceries delivered might be a better option than riding along when you have a large grocery order. The same goes for your medication. Some places, such as the Veteran’s Administration’s Health Care System clinics and hospitals require you to be able to receive your refills through the mail.

3. Other items out of stock in the store

Okay, how many other people, besides me, have gone into a store looking for a certain item only to find out that it is out of stock or only available online? I’m sure I’m not the only one. So, after wasting the gas to get to the store and not being able to find what you need, you end up on the Internet having it shipped to your house anyway. It may take longer, but you still get what you wanted in the first place without driving all over town to find it…
